A project well executed to save the vegetation and natural beauty of our special coast line.
Just as boardwalks have been installed in pristine areas eg woody cape ; nahoon point and corner: Umhlangha rocks: Ballito……. And many more so this path has been built.
Having one path, traversed by millions , having little or no impact on its surroundings, is better than a path or several that erode deep into our earth. These paths are created by mankind are used by the very well known heavy rainfalls of port Edward to further erode our special country. Mankind has taken over the land that drained the water naturally, using earths created marshes and vleis, as we change the nature of the earth to build houses, why cannot we not build a path, solid in its nature to protect the damagealready done by development.
Let’s enjoy our beautiful coastline by being responsible humans !! This being a perfect example of what we need to do !!!

Absolutely ridiculous that one would think of demolishing those steps really!! They benefit all, the elderly, mothers carrying babies down onto the beach, fisherman carrying all their rods and bags. Seriously people do good and others “” just want to destroy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely ridiculous that they want to sue the person that was trying to improve a person getting onto the beach without slipping or falling.

Absolutely ridiculous. This is awesome steps and makes the beach accessible for my elderly parents, due to the railings.... who can not go to any other beach in area. Give Desiree Stalmann a star or 109!! She has done so much for this area for many years....

Adrian nearly broke his ankle twice making his way down the path, before the steps. There were hidden, covered holes and I'm sure many ankles have been sprained there. This is a true asset and help for the elderly especially in our community. Desiree and her heart full of generosity and love is a God Sent light. The darkness CANNOT and will not EVER extinguish the light. Disgusting and petty behaviour. JEALOUSY MAKES HUMANS VERY NASTY....to say the LEAST. We acknowledge and salute your kindness and vision Desiree and watched this emerge day by day as we walk to Spiros Bay every morning and evening. Your team in the form of construction ?? Martin were a joy to meet and Eva is another vessel of PURE JOY and LIGHT. GO TEAM ??????????? we and so many as well as The true source of Pure Love who sent you is so proud of you, as are we! As a 62 yo license holder recreational fisherman I frequently use these stairs to access the beach. As an avid fisherman I carry a fair amount of tackle to target different species. Before the stairs were built I had many accidental falls traversing the slippery pathway. These stairs have made my access to the beach much safer. Please leave these alone. Rather attend to keeping the beaches free from litter and sewerage from failing Municipality infrastructure.

How can the Municipality not accept such generosity. If proper procedures were not followed surely this should be overlooked if the building standards are acceptable. I have been an Estate Agent in Port Edward for 20 years. The Spiro Steps is a must for our Town. Most of the residents come here to retire but it is not easy for them to access the beach.
This Lady used her own funds to make it easier for residents andvholiday makers. She used her own funds but tried to help the community and disabled people. Who would have done it if she did not. Think it adds, a lot of value for Port Edward.

I realize this Petition entry is now (February 2025) to no avail, as the impressive staircase has sadly already been demolished.
As children in the late 1960s to early 1970s, our family enjoyed holidays in the vicinity of Spiros, when my maternal grandparents owned a cottage in nearby 8th Street.
In June 2024 we marvelled at the staircase, and in January this year bemoaned it's loss.
However, I know, as a career-long Historian in a civil service environment, and battling with difficult municipalities, that with an altruistic, generous initiative like this, one still has to secure authorisation for a permanent structure on public land.
It's often frustrating, but it's often difficult to avoid compliance.

I support the main staircase built at Spiros. The previous access was very dangerous for me and my family to access this beautiful beach. The access where these steps have been built was very steep and slippery, especially when carrying my baby. In my view, there has been no negative impact to the environment and has greatly increased access to this public beach for all residents and visitors alike to enjoy. This is the most beautiful beach access staircase I have ever seen and therefore petition that it and the boat garden installation be left in place. In future, this can become a draw point for visitors to our beautiful town.

I think the Spiro steps adds a lot of value to Port Edward as a holiday destination. Most of the residence ate pensioners and the age bracket is mostly between 60 and 95 years old. They can now go down the steps and enjoy being closer to the sea.
L* L* R*** - Port Edward
I think the video clearly shows the effort that was put into the privately funded stairs versus those in the background that were publicly funded. The new stairs make the beach accessible to everyone, from toddlers to the elderly. The previous stairs, for which I'm sure those representing the project gladly claimed their noddy badges, were not at all helpful to very young children or the elderly. Perhaps that installation was nothing more than a show for political advancement. I'm sure with the flood of support for the new stairs most could agree that those trying to impose a demolition of a privately funded improvement, should take a mouthful of humble pie and take a step back. Without an open and justifiable reason for rejection of the stairs, or for removing a member of the community from the group for standing his ground, neither the demolition or the removal is acceptable.
Why were they not stopped from building these steps to begin with...who will be refunding them for labor and material used, should you tear it down!!!

The new stairs at Spiros Rocks beach is stunning, sturdy and very helpful. It is totally absurd to want to destroy these beautiful stairs which were donated and built by people of the community to beautify the Spiros Rocks beach and fishing area in Port Edward. Gracefully accept what was a gift and an upliftment of the area. Why destroy it, take a good look at yourselves and ask yourself what you can do to make things better for your area and the people around you. Stop destroying everything around you. We all want to live in an area with beautiful surroundings which won't embarrass us. Visitors to this area talk to other people who then also wants to visit the area. This generates an income and revenue. Please do not destroy these stairs and please leave the good soul who gave up his own time to build this in peace. Rather build more stairs similar to that. Kind regards, Annie

The positive impact on people visiting the area has already been seen.
The stairs have no environmental impact on the area. Drainage has been considered. The roads around the area have made a much bigger negative impact on the area than anything the public have done. The Spiros steps is a huge improvement on the beach and itd allows easier access for the elderly and disabled to enjoy the beach. It is a beautiful structure done by the kindness of Ms Desire Stalmann who owns properties in our town at her own expense. This adds to the numerous other improvements undertaken by her eg. Painting of the toilets on the beach front, erecting beach signs and rubbish bins to improve the appearance. Sadly she did not get the accolades which certainly deserves but got a negative attitude from a number of locals whom appear to have only their own way of doing things. A sad situation to say the least. Please Desire keep up the good and thank you for creating job opportinies to so many people whom otherwise not have had any income. You deserve a monument!!!

This firstly is a rediculously incorrect assumption saying that the environment has been affected.
Totally on the contrary because by installing the steps, as a bridge over the admirarity, the admiralty has in fact been given a chance to flourish by not continuously being trodden flat.

Go and look at Lucien Beach in Manaba, how Tidy Towns has also professionally installed safe permanent beach access stairs, with hand railing, for locals and tourists to have easy safe access to the Lucien Beach.

This sounds just like a jeolousy bun fight that should be nipped in the butt!

RNM OBVIOUSLY had no intention to fund or even install any acceptable safe beach access, so cudos to the funds donor and the people who constructed the stairs. Thank them don't fight them!

RNM should be happy that the steps were environmentally correctly installed and at NO COST TO RNM, and the people such as with Shelly Beach to Margate Tidy Towns are sparing the municipality the embarrassment of saying they don't have funds to do the job.

Come on RNM, in the true spirit of working with the Residents and Ratepayers, just accept defeat and prevent further embarrassing your management with your ongoing lack of service delivery and weak reasoning/excuses, thank the people concerned for doing your work and let the stairs remain.

It's all for tourism and and municipal economical recovery and maintenance, so RNM can really not complain about this economy saving project!

This is the most beautiful staircase I've ever seen, sturdy and extremely strong, it suits the environment as it's aesthetically pleasing to the eye, with treated and varnished wooden poles in the balustrade and round river stones in the pillars.
For decades, the steps in this place were unusable, very dangerous to use and had no balustrade.
These new fixtures are an asset to the beach and in fact, a necessity which serves both the locals and tourists.

Considering that this was done at no expense to the government, I believe all concerned would be very grateful for this support given by the community to make their environment safer.
